MALAVIKA RAMAKRISHNAN
MULTIMEDIA JOURNALIST
Hi! I’m a South Asian journalist currently based in Chicago. I’m passionate about covering politics, immigration and the intersection of these with culture. As someone who grew up across the world, I offer a global perspective to news which is reflected in the way I approach stories.
I currently freelance for Chicago-based publications. My previous professional position was a Fellow at the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation where I work as a multimedia coordinator and assist the foundation on their hostage advocacy programs. I hold a Master of Science in Social Justice and Solutions Journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. While at Medill, I travelled to Puerto Rico to report on climate and colonialism, interned for five months at The Chicago Tribune where I worked on investigative research and public records and covered both the RNC and DNC for four major media outlets.
Prior to Medill, I worked as a daily news reporter for The Hindu in Chennai, India. I covered the city’s municipal body, and city council that comprised representatives from all 200 wards. I also contributed feature stories on the city’s culture and reviewed web series and movies for the newspaper’s website.
I earned my undergraduate degree in history with a minor in sociology from Shiv Nadar University, India.
I was born and brought up in Chennai, India and my identity as an immigrant and woman of color gives me a global and nuanced perspective, informing my work and the way I approach it.
Aside from journalism, I’m a huge cricket fan, book lover and occasional foodie. I prefer beaches to mountains (I grew up beside a beach!) and I love to yap.
Feel free to reach out to me to just chat or ask any questions. Looking forward to hearing from you!
